When I first met my wife I knew she grew up in the city. I was shocked to discover that she had never once been to a fair. This past week I was equally suprised to find out that she had never been to a air show. The selridge ANG show had not been here for four years due to 9-11 and tarmac re construction. This year we are proud to have been a part of a hopital staff that was a major sponsor for the air show as well as haveing a half page add in the program. Forgive me for blowing my own horn a bit , this was very exciteing for us. The really great thing about the Selfridge air show is that it is free. Free admission free parking. Programs are only $6.00 and beer and sodas are a buck, hot dogs a buck. It really is a nice thing all the way around for the base and the community. I have posted photos 4-6. Lots of good acts includeing P-51's, The former confederate air force bomber, The Thunderbirds, The Red Baron Pizza flying team. Just one of those days when you are glad to be alive and american.

I love airshows. I am glad that you and your wife were able to go to help with and enjoy the show. My ham radio group helps with shows of various types for management or emergency communications links to public service agencies.
I am trying to work out the details, but my wife has a convention that she wants to attend that is the same time as the Reno air races. So, I may have a chance to see these for the first time. That will likely be incorporated into a backroads trip through Utah and Nevada from my home in New Mexico.
When I travel, I most often take the time to stop off at air bases and tour any air museums. I have found this to be well worth the time for me. Some of these little museums don't have as many restrictions. This has allowed me to touch birds like the SR71, U2, and other planes that you generally only see in pictures.

The air races and the Osh Kosh air show are two things I definately hope to see one day. If you make it youll have to post some photos.

I was at the Evergreen Air Museum in Oregon a few weeks ago. They have an SR-71 on display now - what a cool plane, but it was much smaller than I thought. Lot's of old fighters (American, British, and German) and a B-17 you can go inside. Of course they have the Spruce Goose as well. They're turning this into a great museum and I'd highly recommend it if you ever get to western Oregon.

That sounds very cool. I have never been out that wat but we have had some residents move near there and Seattle so we have been getting invites. I think we will get out that way in the next few years. I will sure keep it in mind. Thanx.

The space museum at Huntsville also has a SR-71. I was impressed with the SR-71 the first time I saw it. In flight the noise is impressive for the low decibel rumble of the after burner. Much like the space shuttle taking off.
At the 86 Abbotsford Airshow it landed and then taxied up to the flight line fence with the nose over my head. I talked with the pilots as they got out of the plane. Talk about up close and personal.
Certainlu would like to see the spruce goose. Another free ride was the Martin Mars on Sprout Lake on Vancouver Island. Not sure what they do now. The day we were there one plane was on the ramp out of the water and the other was moored. Never got to see them fly but could get up close and personal.

I saw the Spruce Goose several times in Long Beach California, when that was my old stomping ground.
I never considered the SR71 to be small. I walked under, around and through the first one that I saw, as it was in an open hanger and I thought it was big. Not big like a BUFF, but big none the less. I don't remember having to worry about hitting my head on anything and I did not bend down to get under it.
The perspective on planes is interesting. I used to see a lot of F4s flying around El Toro California. The first time that I got to seem on from arms length I could not believe how large it was. The most awestruck that I have ever been with seeing a plane was when a black F111 came into El Toro. I just knew that the F111 was a sight that you did not want to see if you were on the wrong side. The first time I got to see an F111 up close it was smaller than I thought it was the day I first saw it flying. It was not a small plane, but it sits closer to the ground and just looks smaller than I had expected.

The first time I ever saw a F-16 it really blew me away how small it was. I remember when I was a kid my Grandfathers farm was just South of Petoskeu towards Hortan Bay. He had a huge ridge on the North side. When you got to the top of the hill you could see lake Charlavoix and Lake Michigan. The B-52's used to do bombing runs to try to get under the radar station in Bay view. They would come over the bay mighty close to the water and pull up as they got to the land. You could actually see the guys waveing as they came over, well they were probabling laughing their rears off as we shot rubber arrows at them. Now that was a BIG plane.

Maybe the SR71 looked small to me because it was parked next to the spruce goose 
My main interest in going to the museum was to see the SR71, since I had seen the spruce goose in Long Beach when we lived down that way. When we first walked into the museum we looked around for the SR71 and couldn't find it! Finally we discovered it next to the B-17, and all of us thought it was smaller than we expected. We walked around and under the wings and climbed the stand to look in the cockpit. It looked bigger from above but it didn't seem appreciably larger overall than most of the WWII fighters that were there. Longer but narrower.
Like most folks, I find it one of the most fascinating planes ever built.
